MY STORY

Having worked as a community registered nurse specializing in mental health and addictions for 12 years, I am now pursuing a master's degree in counselling psychology. I have enthusiasm for effectively counselling and advocating for people suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, and trauma, past and present. During my career, I have witnessed the effects of both individual and intergenerational trauma on communities worldwide. Having lived in Mexico, South East Asia and Canada, it has become clear the deep-rooted purpose of systemic racism, discrimination, and war, while highlighting the gaps in care they have produced. The disintegration of culture and society leaves its members marginalized and vulnerable, with an increased risk of poverty, addiction, and other co-morbidities, i.e., diabetes and obesity.
Statistics Canada (2008) states, 76% of Canadians have experienced trauma. Some believe this severe form of suffering is an unavoidable part of life. Like you, I have felt the gut-wrenching heaviness of hurt but, with time, guidance, and encouragement from family, friends, and mentors, I feel more, forgive more, and appreciate the differences and similarities I have with those in my community. It is the coming together of people and the acceptance it breeds which embraces individuals as they learn to exist beyond their traumas.
